World Storytelling Day: Wise Fools - Markus Luukkonen (Finland) & Csenge Zalka (Hungary)

Tue 20 Mar 2018

Join us as we celebrate World Storytelling Day 2018, in association with Storytellers of Ireland and the Federation for European Storytelling.

The theme this year is "Wise Fools" and at Mermaid we are thrilled to welcome two of Europe's finest storytellers Csenge Zalka from Hungary and Markus Luukonen from Finland.

Csenge Virág Zalka is a professional storyteller, author, and Culture Studies scholar from Hungary. She completed a P.H.D. at Bowling Green State University, Ohio, USA, researching digital storytelling and game narratives. Her folktale collections in English include, Tales of Superhuman Powers (2013) and Dancing on Blades: Rare and exquisite Folktales from the Carpathian Mountains (2018). Csenge tells traditional tales (folktales, myths, epics) in English, Spanish, and Hungarian and has worked extensively with museums, libraries, schools, and at festivals in Europe and the USA, also presenting storytelling workshops at various conferences. She has recently returned to live in Hungary and work as a storyteller and facilitator. In 2015, she was the recipient of the J. J. Reneaux Mentorship Grant from the National Storytelling Network (USA).

Finnish storyteller Markus Luukkonen studied performing arts in Helsinki and tells stories in clubs, theatres, galleries and festivals. He performs predominantly for adults and in his work he likes to mix personal stories, folktales and myths. He is a founder member of the Finnish Storytelling Association, Samova Storytelling.
He has worked as a storyteller since 2007 and has performed at storytelling festivals and clubs in several countries around Europe. Markus works as a solo performer and workshop leader, and also as part of different storytelling collaborations. He has recently been working with the international storytelling company 3Troubadours and in an award winning community arts -project called Story Sharing Universum.
Markus tells his stories down-to-earth and dynamic style. He combines dark Finnish humour with beautiful imagery and a gentle finger on the pulse of the human condition.
