Summer Solstice Stories

Liz Weir MBE (Antrim), Paddy O'Brien (Cork) and Órla McGovern (Galway)

Summer Solstice is one of the most ancient of human festivals. It occurs at the midway point in the year when the sun is highest in the sky and the days are longer than the nights. In ancient times, people all over the northern hemisphere would celebrate this time with bonfires, games, stories and feasting. In Ireland celebrations date back over 5000 years to ancient Ireland.

The importance of Summer Solstice ties back to ancient Celtic society’s reliance on agriculture and crops. The reliance and appreciation for the sun is what brought people closer to nature. Through suffering and hardships during the winter months, the Solstice became an important celebration for success and ease during the summer.

Storytelling has always been a key component of celebrations in Ireland and this year we invite you to join us as we celebrate midsummer in the company of some of Ireland's storytelling greats: Liz Weir (Antrim), Paddy O'Brien (Cork) and Órla McGovern (Galway).

While circumstances have forced us away from the midsummer fireside this year, we will use ZOOM to join together in celebration of this powerful time.

Join us and let the power of the Summer Solstice weave its magic on you!
