Bird

Gravesend, England. 12-year-old Bailey lives in a dilapidated apartment with her caring but immature father Bug. When Bug abruptly announces he’s marrying his girlfriend, a furious Bailey runs away and spends the night outdoors. The next morning, she meets a mysterious stranger named Bird who is searching for his own parents. It’s a chance encounter that sets off a series of strange and life-changing events for Bailey and those around here…

The latest film from acclaimed filmmaker Andrea Arnold (Fish Tank, American Honey) elegantly combines social and magical realism in this unusual and heartfelt film. Bird is beautifully shot, boasts a killer soundtrack of smartly-utilised pop hits, and features exceptional performances from Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski and newcomer Nykiya Adams.

‘Newcomer Nykiya Adams triumphs as Bailey, commingling edginess, tenderness, and introspection; so do Barry Keoghan, whose Bug is as big-hearted and droll as he is hapless, and Rogowski, who delivers Bird’s stoic poise with a wispy softness’

Ela Bittencourt, Sight & Sound

‘A film that showcases Arnold’s gifts – the artful shepherding of apparent chaos – while allowing new and surprising elements’
