Late Night Event

Birdsong and I Am a Forest

We are very excited to bring you Part I of our late night events taking place on Friday 14th of June

Part I is a double bill screening of Birdsong and I Am a Forest and Part II is Music and Senses: A Synesthetic Spectacle

Funded by the Arts Council and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media under the Night Time Economy programme. This support has allowed us to keep the doors open late into the night.

"The scheme aims to promote a vibrant cultural ecosystem in Ireland that thrives after dark." - Minister Catherine Martin TD.

Birdsong

Ornithologist Seán Ronayne from Cobh, Co. Cork is on a mission to record the sound of every bird species in Ireland–that’s nearly 200 birds. Often joined by his partner Alba, he travels to some of the country’s most beautiful and remote locations to capture its most elusive species and soundscapes: the busy seabird colony of Skellig Michael; a native woodland free from road noise in the Burren; the corncrake stronghold of Tory Island; a solitary nest in the Donegal uplands. Along the way we get to know Seán, whose hypersensitivity to sound has proven both a struggle and a strength. At once inspiring and cautionary, Seán’s journey illustrates the beauty and importance of sound, and what listening can tell us about the state of our natural world.

I Am a Forest

A Winged Creature walks into the forest, following some inner impulse. There, a group of mysterious creatures, the Humanbirds, will lead her further into the dark forest, where she will face a hard choice. This film is solidly based on larger art project by co-director Elida Maiques. With its roots in archaeology and music anthropology, I Am
a Forest brings us forward into possible eco-futures, embracing storytelling with its strange, fluid narrative. In this forest, birdsong becomes a character itself. It is a little gem offering big questions: What makes as humans? Is it the tools we carry with us? Is it our words or our voice? What will happen when we return to the forest?
