Next Door

Brühl plays Daniel, a popular actor getting ready to fly to London for a casting call. Popping into the local bar, he finds Bruno sitting there and he soon finds himself in a confrontation with him. Initially, Daniel attempts to charm Bruno. But when he sees the middle-aged, former East German is having none of it, Daniel’s patience begins to wear thin.

It transpires, Bruno has been waiting for this for a long time. And so this eternally overlooked man – one of reunification’s losers and a victim of the gentrification of what was once East Berlin – takes his revenge. With Daniel as his target.

Brühl’s directorial debut is a deliciously self-deprecating character study, exploring gentrification and social inequality in Berlin.

‘… yields moments of bittersweet comic exasperation especially when the tone darkens and the stakes are raised… an entertaining skewering of celebrity and the way a single day can flip from triumph to outright disaster.’

- Allan Hunter, Screen International

‘Spanish-German actor Daniel Brühl makes his directorial debut with this delightfully taut, blackly comic satire.’

- Christoper Machell, Cinevue
