The White Crow

The third directorial endeavour from actor/director Ralph Fiennes explores the incredible life of Rudolf Nureyev, the most celebrated ballet dancer of the 20th century. The film centres on the events that took place during a trip to Paris in 1961 at the height of the Cold War where the Kirov Opera Ballet were performing, which culminated in Nureyev’s defection to the West.

Moving from this pivotal event back to his impoverished childhood and through to his training under ballet master Pushkin (Fiennes), the film examines Nureyev’s rebellious determination and infamous single-mindedness to overcome all obstacles. Scripted by David Hare, (The Hours, The Reader) this is the story of a fascinating enigma who gave up everything to allow him the freedom to dance.
