Dance Artist in Residence

Aoife McAtamney

In January 2018, Aoife worked for a week in residence collaborating with Shane Holly, Aoife Sprat and Steven Quinn to develop Pink Breath and the Sung Essays. Using the text of Audre Lorde's 1977 speech 'The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action' as a guide for the performance, an intimate evening of original music and movement took place on Thursday, January 11th, marking the first showing of Pink Breath and the Sung Essays.

For her second work in development, Aoife performed a contemporary dance solo called ‘MUSE’ as part of An Evening with Our Dance Artists on Wednesday 17th October. In this dynamic piece, the nine Greek muses of the arts are the choreographic motivation. The dancer’s sharp movement sequences create perceptible physical patterns, constructing a distinct and spirited physical reality on stage. The muses’ involvement in the solo provide an opportunity for the artist to articulate our basic need for continuous physical expression.

Mermaid supported the production of these new shows with a financial contribution and free use of our multi-purpose room and theatre with technical support.
