The Tasters

East Prussia,1943. Secretary Rosa has fled Berlin to stay with her in-laws whilst she awaits further news of her husband who is missing on the Russian front. Shortly after her arrival, Rosa, along with a group of other young local women, is rounded up by the SS and taken to a secret location.

For the next two years these women become “The Tasters”, and are forced to eat the food destined for the Führer table, to ensure that it has not been poisoned.

Inspired by the extraordinary account of Margot Wölk, who in 2012 revealed to the German press her role as one of Hitler’s tasters, director Silvio Soldini has re-imagined that fascinating story into this compelling war drama.

‘Soldini spends much of the film observing the women as they get to know one another. Although it has its share of dramatic events, he is at his best when observing details like the way the women look at each other when they’ve first been rounded up and are assuming that a different fate awaits them.’
