Slow Stitches: Sewing as a mindful practice with Ciara Brehony (1pm)
Spend time in a contemplative space where we use stitching as a mindful practice. Rather than looking for outcomes, the focus is on the emergent process, on tending and mending our inner selves. Once upon a time, stitching and handwork of all kinds was not only normal but often a necessity. In today's world, where this is no longer necessary, and much of our lives are spent online, many of us are looking once again to find opportunities for creative handwork, where the hands are engaged but the mind is free to unwind and process, a chance for quiet reflection. In this hand-stitching class, we will explore slow processes that allow thinking time and a real connection to what we are making. We will use simple techniques, and repurposed materials to create a mini quilt.
All materials provided, but participants are welcome to bring any textiles that they would like to include. No previous sewing experience necessary.
Ciara Brehony
Ciara Brehony is a socially engaged artist working through textiles, natural materials, and collaborative processes. Her practice is rooted in slow handwork as a way of fostering attention, presence, and connection. With a background in community arts and alternative education, she explores how embodied craft can support meaning-making, reciprocity, and ecological awareness. She is guided by questions of how we make sense of the world through our hands, and how collective craft practice can reweave a deeper relationship with the more-than-human world.
