GAP DAY 2021 – Call for Applications

Gap Day is an initiative led by Lian Bell and Mermaid that offers professional freelance theatre practitioners across Ireland paid time to think, dream and plan. Gap Days are available to directors, theatre makers, writers, designers, production managers and creative producers - essentially, anyone who has a prime creative role in the making of the work. This year we're expanding the programme and aiming to offer 100 Gap Days!

A Gap Day enables freelance theatre makers to take time out and dedicate a day to the creative research and thinking they haven't be able to do lately. How they spend the day is up to them: reading, writing, thinking, drawing, walking, dreaming. Whatever they don’t normally have time to do; whatever they think is needed.

The Gap Day team will facilitate a workspace in an arts centre or cultural centre local to the theatre maker for their Gap Day, and the host will arrange a time to meet the Gap Day artist for an informal chat. We even provide lunch! This year we're also going to host monthly check ins for participating artists, offer a small stipend for an artist to pay an Artist's Friend for a creative conversation, and have a fund to help artists with additional access needs to be able to get the most out of their Gap Day.

We welcome applications from across the island, and from people of all genders, nationalities, races, cultural backgrounds, ages, religions, languages, different abilities, sexual orientations or socio-economic statuses. We want to hear from artists who are parents and carers. We particularly encourage applications from members of groups who are underrepresented in the cultural sector.
